Can we coloured something with food colouring? April 17th

The Maple group focused on mixing colours as they have been doing for three weeks.
They never seem to tire of it and are showing the kind of discipline and care a good scientist might. 
 

2weeks ago, we decided to have a juice shop ( making some juices from coloured water)

And then later in the week, we tried to take the colour out of from spring flowers.

- The children choose a kind of flower, picked some petals and placed them into ziplock bag with some water.

  Then they crushed the petals with their fingers to take the colour out from the flowers.

Later on we made own coloured rice!

The children used four colours ( Red,Blue,Green,Yellow )

Each child measured ½ cup of long white rice and put some vinegar in it. And then they chose one colour of food colouring ( put about 6 drops into their container. ).

                     

                            

 They started to stir and mix with a spoon.

Then a child suggested that another colour be added. 

They love to continue to explore how colours mix together and they watch with excitement and commitment to the outcome. Most of the children were able to guess the outcome of two colours being mixed together. 

 They used scientific thinking to observe, predict and compare, and they experimented with cause and effect. ‘What will happen if I mix all three primary colours together?’ ‘How much yellow do you need to add to make green?’ ‘Can I make the exact same colour twice?’ Only few drops of food colouring will change their colour.

 

None of the children had exactly the same colour and all were beautiful and vibrant.   I have displayed them on by the window.

Everyone were so proud of making their own coloured rice they could later use in their play. 

 

SAKURA drawing- Friday's Art

During my Japan trip, I got a book called " SAKURA- (cherry blossom in Japanese)."

It is written by a Japanese author.

I translated and read it to the children.

The children were given 4 colours: red, white, light green and brown.
We have been learning about mixing colours to change what we see.

We took a close look at the some cherry blossoms that I picked up from the ground on my way to work this morning.

We noticed there are many different pink colours.  Some are much deeper pink than others.

 They all started to draw their own ways.

Some children enjoyed mixing red and white.  It was a very beautiful gradation of red colour.

 Some children drew a few branches and very beautiful cherry blossoms on their creations.
And they I saw some bugs on their drawing that are sharing their tree.

Through these experiences the children are learning not just about colour mixing but about the blossom's connection to branches, the sky and the ground.  In this way they are subtly learning about the interconnection of the planet.

Friday's art- Snow Art -Feb.23-

It was a wonderful time to having Snow Art like today!!


Supplies are:
-Very fresh snow just got from outside :)
-Coloured water of green, orange, purple, blue. ( few drops of food colouring + water)
-Cups
-Q-tips
-Syringes

 Each children got a snow canvas. And the children started to make own snow art.

 This art is exploring of mixing colour on the snow canvas (plate of snow) .
 They built their hand strength and coordination like squeezing the rubber pippet to squirt colour onto the snow.
 They tried to change finger strength to explore how much the water could bring into the pippet.

 

We are learning about generosity and sharing. 
Each table has limited cups that coloured water.
"Can I have blue colour ?
"We will share"
"Here you are"
We heard some sweet conversations between children.

Just near the end, two children noticed,
" Naomi ! It's like coloured water is eating snow! "
"Yeah, like monster!!"

They noticed melting is not only caused by ambient temperature but that coloured water also made snow melt.

The children all enjoyed themselves until the snow half melted.

Puppet Dragon-Friday's Art

Feb.16th is Chinese New Year. Some children know this special day. 
Today's art, we made Puppet Dragons.

The children coloured a dragon's head and tail with crayons and coloured pencils.

​

Each children picked a favorite colour of constraction paper for the body.
and then folded an accordion patterm of back and forth movement.
Learing about patterns is an important step in math understanding.
The children felt prout of their folding.

They connected the head with the body and tail. And added two popcicle sticks to hold.

 

 

They all loved this lesson and the art and discussion was invigorating.

 

 

Shelter-Generosity Feb.6th.

In two weeks, The Maple group (on Tuesday)  has been reading a book called "Shelter " by Celine Claire.

In the story, As a big storm approaches, two strangers (bears) arrive in the forest. All the animal families, safe in their homes, are worried.  The two bears knocks on each door and ask for shelter. but no one will let them in.

After reading this story, we were wondering why all the animals couldn't help them?

The children said:

  They are afraid the strangers.
  They are not friends.
  They are bears.
  bear is big.
  Their house are too small.



To play with the idea of "shelter" and to practice the act of welcoming we made own shelter.
Each child picked an animal puppet, and got a box and began making a shelter.

Fireworks for Victoria day- Friday's art

To celebrate Victoria day, we made fireworks collage using recycled materials  like paper cups together with origami paper.
We watched a short Video of last years of Victoria day's fireworks and talked about the brightness of the colours at night time. Some children think fireworks look like flowers exploding in the sky.

My fireworks is white, because it's bright.

The children were excited to show how their bodies can look like fireworks. They took turns demonstrating how to bend and extend their arms and be explosive like fireworks.

Painting tulips -Friday art

  
A vase of tulips was set at each table. The children used their senses of smell and touch to explore the flowers.
Before painting a picture of the tulips, we watched a short video on how tulips grow.
The children used forks with paintbrushes for this activity. It is very interesting to watch how each child has a different painting process.


Hyra started to paint the grass first, Olin painted the stems, and Emma painted the tulip flower before adding leaves.




These pictures are the ordinary moments of children's art. Each is a beautiful masterpiece.
